Doyle announces U.S. Women's Gymnastics Classic

Monroe County Executive Jack Doyle announced last Thursday that over 120 of America's elite female gymnasts will travel to Monroe County to compete in the 1999 U.S. Classic Gymnastics Competition.

This high profile national event is scheduled to be held in the Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial on Aug.7.

The Classic is a key event in a year that includes the World Championships in Tianjin, China. The event in Rochester is the final opportunity to qualify for the 1999 John Hancock U.S. Championships to be held in Sacramento, California, Aug. 25-28. From there, the top 16 advance to the World Team Trials in Kansas City, Sept. 15-18. That meet will be used to help select the six women who will represent the USA at the World Championships in China, the qualifying meet for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.

Doyle made the announcement at the Gymnastics Training Center of Rochester where he outlined the Monroe County Sports Development Corporation's (MCSDC) list of sporting events slated for Monroe County this summer. Fittingly, the announcement was made today on National Girls and Women in Sports Day.

"We couldn't be happier with the high profile and caliber of sporting events coming to Monroe County," Doyle said.

"The Sports Development Corporation has proven its worth in 1998, setting the stage for an even better sports card in 1999. The Gymnastics Classic is just one example of the outstanding sporting events Monroe County residents can look forward to this year."

Other events scheduled for 1999 are the Susan B. Anthony Sports Festival (July 10) at Frontier Field; NYS amateur Hockey Association Girls Championship Tournament (March 26-28) at Lakeshore Hockey Arena; the Maccabbi Games (Aug. 15-20) at various locations; and the Deaf Gaines (June 27 to July 3) at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The MCSDC officially opened its doors just over one year ago, citing three main goals: to attract and bring sporting events and conventions to the Rochester/Monroe County area, to expand upon already existing events, and to develop sports focusing on youth within the community.

During the announcement of the 1999 sports line-up, a cake was served to commemorate the successful first year anniversary of the Monroe County Sports Development Corporation.

"Success for the Sports Development Corporation means success for the whole community," said Doyle. "High profile sporting events, greater use of community facilities and an enhanced community image are all part of successful sports development. These achievements, combined with growth in youth sports opportunities, are what make ours a community with both vision and the ability to deliver.
